EU to start imposing sanctions on people linked to human rights violations
(MENAFN) The European Union has announced a new wave of sanctions aimed at individuals and organizations linked to severe human rights violations in both Iran and Russia.
As stated by official reports, the European Council approved restrictive actions on eight people and one organization under its Global Human Rights Sanctions framework. These sanctions were applied due to their involvement in serious human rights abuses carried out on behalf of Iranian state entities beyond the country's borders.
Among those penalized is a group referred to as the Zindashti Network, which has been identified as a criminal organization allegedly tied to Iran’s Intelligence and Security Ministry. The leader of this network, along with five of his associates, has been singled out.
In addition, sanctions were also imposed on Mohammed Ansari, who heads Unit 840 of the Quds Force, part of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
“Today’s listings confirm the EU’s concerns about transnational repression by Iranian state bodies through the use of proxy agents, in particular involving criminals and organised crime networks targeting dissidents and human rights defenders across the world, including on EU territory,” the statement said.
According to the announcement, those affected will have their assets frozen and will be barred from receiving any financial support or resources, whether directly or indirectly. The individuals on the list are also prohibited from entering any EU member state.
