EU Socialists Criticize von der Leyen for Undermining International Law
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the group said: “The remarks by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stating that Europe can no longer act as a guardian of the existing international order are unacceptable," according to reports.
The lawmakers warned that raising doubts about the role of international law at a time of mounting global tensions could embolden those seeking to weaken established international norms. “At a moment when international law is under unprecedented pressure, questioning its centrality sends a dangerous signal to those who openly seek to undermine it. These words must be clarified and corrected without delay,” the statement added.
According to the group, the global system based on international rules is facing serious challenges. They cited several ongoing conflicts as examples, referring to “Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, the devastation in Gaza and the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran” as situations that are testing the authority of the United Nations Charter.
Earlier the same day, von der Leyen addressed members of the European Parliament and reiterated her view that there should be "no tears shed" for Iran, which has been facing US-Israeli military attacks since Feb. 28. She accused the country’s leadership of carrying out decades of repression against its own people.
In response, the S&D group stressed that the European Union must continue to defend the principles of international law.
“International law is not an body_abstract ideal. It is the foundation of peace, security and cooperation between nations,” the statement said. The group also emphasized that the European project itself was founded on the belief that “power must be constrained by law.”
