EU Car Market Grows as Electric, Hybrid Vehicles Surge

(MENAFN) Passenger car sales across the European Union increased by 4% in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, driven largely by strong demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, according to industry data released on Thursday.

New vehicle registrations reached 2.82 million units between January and March, based on figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. When including the wider European region—covering the EU, the European Free Trade Association, and the UK—sales rose 4.1% to 3.52 million units.

Among major EU markets, Italy recorded the highest growth at 9.2%, followed by Spain with 7.6%.

Electric vehicles were the main driver of expansion, with battery-electric car registrations rising 32.5% year-on-year to 546,937 units, accounting for 19.4% of all new car sales in the bloc.

Several large markets saw particularly strong growth in this segment, including Italy, where sales increased by 65.7%, as well as Spain and Germany, which posted gains of 41.6% and 41.3% respectively.

Hybrid vehicles remained the dominant category in the market, representing 38.6% of total sales. Registrations for this segment rose 12.8% to 1.08 million units. Plug-in hybrids also posted solid growth, increasing by 29.7% to 268,344 units.

By contrast, traditional internal combustion engine vehicles continued to decline. Petrol car registrations dropped 18.2%, reducing their market share to 22.6%, while diesel sales fell 15.7%, bringing their share down to 7.7%.

In March alone, the European car market recorded a strong monthly increase of 12.5% year-on-year, reaching 1.15 million units sold.
