EU Parliament Debate Sparks Clash Over Rights, Migration, Free Speech
Right-wing and far-right political groups criticized EU institutions, arguing that current policies on migration and civil liberties are failing to reflect public concerns. The debate centered on a report examining the state of fundamental rights across the European Union for 2024 and 2025.
Opening the discussion, Greens Rapporteur Anna Strolenberg argued that basic rights must remain non-negotiable and should not be treated as political leverage.
She warned about what she described as increasing discrimination and hate speech across Europe, saying social exclusion based on identity or beliefs can have dangerous consequences.
“In a society where people are excluded because of who they love or how they worship, it eventually becomes a place that is safe for no one,” she said.
Strolenberg also highlighted what she described as a rise in both antisemitism and Islamophobia across the continent, stressing that addressing one form of prejudice should not come at the expense of confronting another.
“But if you think you have to choose, you are missing the point; combating racism means ensuring everyone feels safe and truly is safe,” she added.
She urged both the European Commission and EU member states to uphold their legal and moral obligations consistently, warning against selective application of rights protections.
Michael McGrath, the European Commissioner responsible for democracy, justice, the rule of law, and consumer protection, also addressed the debate, stating that safeguarding fundamental rights remains a collective responsibility shared across all EU institutions and member states.
