EU Pushes for Peace Deal, Safe Shipping in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) The European Union is working toward achieving a durable end to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with a strong focus on restoring maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Speaking to the European Parliament, von der Leyen said a recent pause in hostilities presents an opportunity to intensify diplomatic efforts, including maintaining ceasefire arrangements involving Iran and Lebanon.

“Our shared goal is now to see a lasting end to the war, and this includes restoring full and permanent freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without tolls,” she said.

She also emphasized that any future peace agreement would need to address concerns related to Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile capabilities, adding, “And it is equally clear that any peace agreement will have to address Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile program.”

Von der Leyen noted that EU officials have held discussions with several regional actors, including Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and the secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as part of efforts to reduce tensions and promote stability.

However, she warned that the economic consequences of the conflict are likely to continue “for months or even years,” particularly due to disruptions affecting global energy and shipping routes, which could drive up prices worldwide.

She also highlighted the financial impact on Europe, saying the continent’s fossil fuel import costs had risen by more than €27 billion ($31.6 billion) in just 60 days of conflict, “without one single molecule of energy in addition.”
