EU Races to Deploy Privacy-Safe Age Verification App

(MENAFN) The European Commission has urged member states to fast-track the rollout of a new bloc-wide age verification application, pushing for full deployment before the close of 2025, the institution announced Wednesday.

The tool — engineered to be both secure and privacy-preserving — is designed to shield minors from harmful and inappropriate online content while ensuring users' personal data remains protected, the Commission said in an official statement.

Under the framework outlined in the recommendation, member states have the flexibility to launch the age verification solution either as a standalone application or embed it within the broader European Digital Identity Wallet infrastructure. The guidance also lays out concrete steps to guarantee interoperability and rapid, consistent implementation across all EU member nations.

Critically, the Commission has already engineered a working blueprint for the application. The system is designed to allow users to confirm they satisfy a required age threshold without revealing their exact age, identity, or any additional personal information — a privacy-first architecture intended to address longstanding concerns over data exposure in age-gating systems. National authorities are now tasked with adapting and deploying the solution within their own jurisdictions.

The Commission framed the initiative as a core child safety obligation under existing EU law. "Protecting children online is a priority for the Commission. Under the EU's Digital Services Act, online platforms must ensure a high level of privacy, security and safety for minors online," the statement said.
