MSAR Legislative Assembly response to the “Macao Special Administrative Region: Annual Report for 2025” Published by the European Union

MACAU, September 24 - The recently published “Macao Special Administrative Region: Annual Report for 2025” by the European Union contains unfounded comments on affairs of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR), including the elections for the 8th Legislative Assembly. The Legislative Assembly of the MSAR expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to such inappropriate remarks.

Since Macao’s return to the motherland, under the firm support of the Central Government and through the joint efforts of all sectors of society, the successful practice of the principle of “one country, two systems” has yielded achievements that are evident to all. The elections for the 8th Legislative Assembly of the MSAR were successfully conducted in full compliance with the law, in a fair, impartial, and transparent environment. Electors actively participated in the voting process. The new Legislative Assembly and the MSAR Government each perform their respective functions, maintaining close communication and mutual cooperation; the members of the Legislative Assembly diligently fulfill their duties in accordance with the law, jointly serving the citizens of Macao.

The Electoral Affairs Commission of the Legislative Assembly, in exercising the authority conferred upon it by the Legislative Assembly Electoral Law, ruled that certain candidates did not meet the eligibility requirements. This decision embodies the principle of “patriots administering Macao”. The fundamental rights of residents of the Macao Special Administrative Region, including the rights to vote and to stand for election, are fully protected under the Macao Basic Law and relevant local legislation.

The MSAR Legislative Assembly urges the European Union to respect the principles of international law and the basic norms of international relations, to cease interfering in China’s internal affairs and in the affairs of the MSAR, and to promote the stable and healthy development of relations between both sides through concrete and constructive actions.
