Former European Leaders Urge EU To Challenge West Bank Settlement Expansion

(MENAFN) Nearly 500 former European diplomats, ministers and senior officials called on the European Union and its member states Monday to take action against Israel’s settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, warning that a proposed development near Jerusalem could further threaten prospects for a two-state solution.

The former officials urged the bloc to respond to Israel’s planned E1 settlement project, which would involve the construction of more than 1,200 housing units in the area near Jerusalem.

Among those backing the appeal are former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, former French Prime Ministers Dominique de Villepin and Alain Juppe, former Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and former Italian Prime Minister Massimo D’Alema.

The signatories warned that the planned development could split the occupied West Bank into separate areas while further cutting off occupied East Jerusalem from the rest of the territory.

The letter described a two-state solution as “the only possible outcome that could resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

“Despite the far-reaching consequences of the new land annexation, the EU has taken no measures to deter E1,” the former officials said, accusing the bloc of failing to fulfill its responsibilities in response to alleged violations of international law.

They also expressed criticism of Germany and Italy for rejecting calls to impose sanctions on Israel.
